Nina Salaman Poetry Reading: An afternoon of poetry, remembrance and connection

On Sunday, 31 May 2026 we welcomed 45 guests to Willesden Jewish Cemetery’s historic prayer hall for an afternoon of poetry, remembrance and connection.

The event brought together volunteers, family members and guests to share readings of Nina's original poetry and Hebrew translations, filling the space with creativity, thoughtfulness and warmth.

We were pleased to hear reflections from Nomi Willis, our Volunteer and Learning Programmes Coordinator, Jeremy Schonfield, Professor of Jewish Liturgy at Leo Baeck College, and Nina's grandchildren, Peter Salaman Hamburger and Jenny Salaman Manson. Together, they painted a holistic picture of a woman who made a profound mark on British Jewry.

The afternoon concluded with a visit to Nina's grave, offering a moment of quiet reflection and remembrance.

Part of Jewish Culture Month.

DEDICATION

Blessing the songs of old,
Summoning forth the new,
You with a wand of gold
Lent them a life more true.
Now as their ways unfold
Out into vistas blue,
Here stand the new and old,
Giving themselves to you.
